“If you have come to help me, you are wasting your time. But if you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together.” ~Aboriginal rights activists from Queensland, Australia in the 1970s
Story is transformative. This is why we love theatre so much! You possess the power to help expand the narrative and enrich communities through exposure to stories of BIPOC Artists.
The next step is to commit to long-lasting and measurable change. As a patron, you have the power to make a difference.
Below, please see a few examples of what your pledge could look like. Each pledge below is just a single example of the sort of pledge you can choose to make. It is important to go through the process of self-reflection before committing to specific change for the future.
Do something.
Hold yourself accountable.
Stand by your community in solidarity with love.
I pledge to demand change from the theatre companies that I patronize—by writing letters, by making phone calls, and by using my leverage as a ticket buyer.
I pledge to contact the theatre companies I patronize to demand to see more BIPOC stories on their stages.
I pledge to make donations to theatre companies that have programs or scholarships specifically to support and uplift BIPOC Artists.
I pledge to use my power and leverage as a ticket buyer to only patronize theatre companies that are actively anti-racist.
I pledge to do my research and only volunteer my time with theatre companies that support and celebrate BIPOC Artists, and that are actively anti-racist.
I pledge to challenge my friends and family, who are also theatre patrons, to take a Stand By Me Pledge in solidarity with BIPOC Artists.
