"The artivist (artist + activist) uses his/her artistic talents to fight and struggle against the injustice and oppression—by any medium necessary. The artivist merges commitment to freedom and justice with the pen, the lens, the brush, the voice, the body, and the imagination. The artivist knows that to make an observation is to have an obligation.
~M. K. Asante
Activism and the creative power of the arts is inherent to create change. The artist, through their craft, is able to move the audience emotionally to connect them to their true selves and to bring about social change.
Without the artists, audiences are unable to see themselves until it is in front of them onstage.
You, the artist, are crucial to this work!
We need you to join your voice with ours. Below, please see examples of what your pledge could look like.
Each pledge below is just a single example of the sort of pledge you can choose to make. It is important to go through the process of self-reflection before committing to specific change for the future.
Do something.
Hold yourself accountable.
Stand by your community with solidarity and love.
The pledge to use my artistry and public platform to promote and engage in actively anti-racist work.
The pledge, as a non-BIPOC Artist, to never accept a role explicitly written for a BIPOC artist.
The pledge to speak up and stand up for BIPOC Artists in the rehearsal room and in the dressing room.
The pledge to demand change from the theatres that employ me—through phone calls, through letter writing, and through my patronage.
The pledge to use my power in the audition room to cast BIPOC Artists in traditionally white roles.
The pledge to bring my fellow artists together, and to use our artistry to celebrate and uplift BIPOC stories and lives.
